Michigan convention

On March 5/6 2011 We attended the MSRCBA convention at the Michigan University Pavilion. A very large show with a very good showing of angoras. 2 open shows and an angora specialty show. The angora specialty was won by our very own Shannon Carter with her senior white french doe as Bob
Congratulations Shannon!! Well done

Our senior white satin angora doe Lilly won Bob in the specialty show and in open show B. Our red satin senior doe (Cayene) won Bob in open Show A.

The entire show ran over 2 days and was a very well run and organized event. We were still home on Sunday at a reasonable time. Everyone had a good time and it was nice to see old friends again.

I hope everyone had a safe and healthy Christmas holiday and wish you a very Happy New Year.

We have some new additions to our family this month: Sage (french angora) had a litter of 2 on Dec 10 and Geo (satin angora) had a litter of 2 on Dec 15. Not sure why the #2 seems to be the constant right now.

I am adding pictures of our new babies. The black 2 are the french from Sage X Rollo and 2 lovely red satins from Geo X Nitro

Well, it was our lucky day at the Spencerville show on Sat. Maple Glen entered a total of 9, yes 9 rabbits in 3 shows. 2 open shows and the angora specialty show.
In show A French Angoras
BOB, BOV Our sable pearl doe Bonnie also winning RIS for show A
BOS, Broken black buck, "Magnet"
1st place junior buck, sable, Homi
1st place junior doe, sable, Baby ruth

Show B
Bonnie wins again. Bob and Bov
Magnet wins Bos
1st place junior buck Homi
2nd place junior doe, Baby Ruth, 1st place being won by Farfelu's Sweet Marie a black doe.

Angora Specialty show
Bonnie Bob, Bov
Magnet 1st place senior buck
Homi wins 1st junior buck and Bos.
Baby ruth wins 1st jr doe.

In the Satin Angora classes: Maple Glens Hanna places 1st in show A and Angora Specialty, and Bos in both shows. Celestrial rabbitry's tort senior doe winning best Snr doe in show B. Our white senior buck "Nitro" winning Bob in all three shows. In the Junior classes: Cassandra wins 1st jr doe in all 3 shows and Bos in show B. Fergus winning 1st jr buck in show A, B and 2nd in Angora Specialty with his brother Orion placing 2nd in show A, B and 1st in Angora Specialty.

These are amazing results for Maple Glen, with 4 of the buns earning their grand champion legs. We are very proud of all our rabbits.

We are hoping to attend the Grand Finals in Syracuse on Oct 3, 2009. See you all there.

New Beginnings

It has been some time since I have added anything to this blog. Much has been happening at Maple Glen this year. Starting out 2009 was not so great, but there are always good things and bad things that go on. Hopefully there are many more good things then bad for everyone. Jan. /09 saw a few losses due to bad feed, which many experienced last year from the Purina problems.

On the show table, we are pleased to write that Maple Glens Rogue has done very well for herself. Acquiring 6 legs in total, therefore acheiving her G.C. and winning RIS at the Dorchester, Forest City Rabbit Club show on May 30. 2009. Several of our Satin Angora rabbits have all won legs.

Maple Glen attended the Angora Nationals in New York on May 9, our little junior rew buck, Nitro won BOS for Satin Angoras, and a red tort senior doe earned 2nd in the coloured senior doe class.

I even entered some of our wool and skeins in the wool and garment contest for the first time ever. What a surprise!! A skein of 2 ply french angora wool won first place, and a skein of 2ply satin angora won 3rd, An entry of coloured plucked satin angora wool won 3rd place. What an exciting day.

In the rabbitry, Satin Angoras Somerhill Cairo and Maple Glens Blazer have had a litter of 6 red kits, 3 buck and 3 does. Born May 3, 2009.
French Angoras: Bonnies BG2 (a sable pearl doe) and Farfelu's Cadbury (a chocolate buck) had a litter of 5. Amazingly enough they had 3 BLACK, yes black and 2 BLUE, yes blue, go figure that one out. (3does and 2 bucks) born May 25, 2009.

WOOL BLOCK

Those dreaded two words. I just cringe when I hear them. The bane of angora breeders everywhere, and all rabbits really.

It is a tightrope act we play as we try to keep those coats longer and longer on the rabbit, aiming for 5, 6 months maybe more. Knowing that the molting process has begun, the coat is starting to slip, but we still try to maintain them. The rabbit is grooming itself even more and the fiber becomes loose and ends up in their little stomachs creating a larger and harder mass. Then they stop eating. Now begins the process of medicating and trying to move the mass out. Finally we realize what is going on and remove the problem by clipping or plucking that long beautiful coat.

By then, the rabbit is miserable, maybe in pain. They may also have started to lose weight.

In no time at all, they become dehydrated and underweight, as they continue to refuse food the body fat is burned first and then the muscle mass and eventually death. Even though the process seems to go quickly, the poor creatures are literally starving to death. Wool block is not fussy, it will strike your Grand Champion as well as your wooler or pet.

There are many opinions on how best to treat this problem and just as many, if not more, suggestions on preventative measures. Rabbits are very diverse, and what may work for one, may not necessarily be the best option for another. We have tried many recipes, and treatments over the years, and can honestly say that our losses to wool block are now nil.

On a much happier note. Our satin angora doe: Maple Glens Geo (red doe) has kindled two lovely white satin babies, 1 buck and 1 doe. The sire of this lovely pair is Stryder, (white buck) from Schoonover farms. When I figure out how to add pictures to this blog, I will post them. They were born Jan 5/09.

On Jan 3, friends Julie Martin and Shannon Carter attended the show in Rochester, N.Y. Unfortunatly I was unable to attend due to work commitments, but they very generously offered to take my rabbits with them. I must say for all their hard work in getting my rabbits on the show table this is the result: Maple Glens Rogue, a red satin angora doe, won BOV in the Angora specialty show, and has now aquired her first senior and GC leg. Thank you so much Julie and Shannon, I appreciate your efforts. Congratulations Julie with your champagne bunny winning BOB.

Maple Glen Angoras is a small rabbitry, with holes for 24 rabbits. We raise english, french and satin angoras. As we strive to improve and raise each breed we are faced with a space challenge. At this point, I will be focusing on the French and Satin Angoras, which makes it necessary to thin out our herd. Our English angoras are for sale.
